Brief History:

As per our records the Church was established in the year 1848 and the first Parish Priest was Rev Fr Jerome from Portugal. The Parish is famous for Sacred Heart devotion started by Fr. A.J. Adaikalam in the year 1954.Every Friday and particularly First Friday. People visited the church and with this the devotion to Sacred Heart grew and many Hindus and Muslims also visit the Church. On 8th September 2005 the present Archbishop His Grace, Most Rev Dr AM Chinnappa SDB DD Ph D issued a decree elevating this Parish as a Shrine of the Archdiocese.

About the Church

Chennai (erstwhile Madras) is the capital of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, located on Coramandel coast off Bay of Bengal. Christianity arrived to Chennai with St. Thomas around 50CE.

Portuguese arrived in 1522 and built a port called “San thome” (present Santhome in Chennai) and “Santhome Church” after the Christian apostle, St. Thomas, who is believed to have preached in the area between 52 and 70 CE. The English East India Company under Francis Day bought lands in Chennai…
