Brief History:

St. Xavier’s Church, Avaraikulam, has a rich history dating back several centuries. The settlement began when a family from Kurumpur migrated to Avaraikulam during the early 17th century. From this lineage, Devacakayam embraced the Roman Catholic faith in 1858 through the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. Joseph Gregory. As the Catholic community grew, the faithful established their first place of worship. Later, a new church building was constructed in 1889 and dedicated to St. Francis Xavier. The church houses an ancient wooden statue of St. Xavier, believed to have been brought from Goa around 135 years ago. Devotees continue to venerate this sacred statue, attributing numerous blessings and miracles to the intercession of the saint. Today, the church serves approximately 75 Catholic families, and the annual feast of St. Francis Xavier is celebrated from November 24 to December 3 with great devotion.
