Brief History:

The shrine developed in the 1600s under Jesuit missionary influence. Fr. Xavier Borgius served fifteen years, greatly advancing Christian growth during 1685-1700. By 1731, the church was dedicated to the Heavenly Mother as its patroness and hosted regular worship. The shrine serves approximately 1,000 families with 22 religious women in service. Six dependent churches serve surrounding villages including Ettunaickanpatti and Sevalppatti. The feast is celebrated on August 15 (Assumption of Mary) with a 10-day celebration. Educational institutions include two primary schools and St. Aloysius High School.
