History

In 1968, a few people from the village of Keeja Manakudi bravely crossed the tide despite the raging sea and came back to Keeja Manakudi after catching a large number of lobsters in the sea opposite Leepuram area of Leepuram Panchayat, the south-eastern border of Kumari.
By 1972, the Mela Manakudi people had come to Leepuram in more than 50 buildings. They collected five lobsters for each tree and sold them, and with the money they got, a school was built on the beach of Leepuram, which spread the light of this town and opened the eyes of knowledge. Now a post office is also functioning here.
In 1978, the mound was rehabilitated and some more huts were built and people settled. A thatched shed was built near the present study hall where people used to pray in the morning and evening.
In a fire accident on 24-11-1978, more than 100 houses and people’s belongings and tools were burnt to ashes. Neighboring towns, which were not united until now, supported these people after the fire. In 1980, the Tamil Nadu government offered to build 50 sets of houses.
Thus the Arogyapuram temple survived various trials and became a branch of the Kanyakumari temple in 1980.
In 1981, there was a fire again for the second time and more than 50 houses were burnt to ashes. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. Kumari was there at that time. A petition was given to MGR and in return he ordered the concerned authorities to convert Arogyapuram into a model village.
