Brief History:

Holy Mary Cathedral Basilica at Melathur, Tiruchirappalli is the mother church of the Tiruchirappalli Diocese. The original cathedral was constructed during Rev. Fr. Louis Garnier’s tenure and dedicated on June 29, 1841. The 175-year-old original structure required replacement due to structural deterioration, and a new cathedral was consecrated on May 3, 2015. The cathedral serves approximately 1,200 families and 30 religious communities. The solemn parish feast is celebrated for ten days beginning on the Sunday following September 8.
