About Sacred Heart Church, Babumahal

Sacred Heart Church, Babumahal, is one of the historic Catholic missions in the Katoria region of Banka District, Bihar. During the time of the Patna Jesuit missionaries, a small Catholic community existed in the Barney area, which was regularly visited from Harimohra.

In 1962, the Franciscan Third Order Regular (TOR) Fathers acquired a Baptist Mission property at Babumahal and transferred their Novitiate from Gokhla to this location. The present church was constructed by Fr. Simon Engler TOR in 1965, marking an important milestone in the growth of the Catholic mission.

Over the years, the parish has been served by many dedicated priests, including Fr. Augustine Neerampuzha TOR, Fr. Ferdinand Nediyidath TOR, Fr. Paul Tudu, Fr. Robert Herzer TOR, Fr. Michael Edananapadavil TOR, Fr. Joseph Punnambel TOR, Fr. Marion Pulichimakil TOR, Fr. Daniel Kisku TOR, and Fr. Varghese.

Sacred Heart Church, Babumahal, currently serves around 370 Catholics belonging to approximately 60 families. The parish also provides pastoral care to the outstation community at Salabona, located about 9 km away. Situated approximately 95 km from Bhagalpur, Babumahal continues to contribute to the spiritual growth of the region and has produced several priestly and religious vocations.
