History
The Catholic mission in Chirkee traces its roots to the early missionary visits made during the 1930s and 1960s. Later, Rev. Fr. Scaria Kollerette acquired land for the mission and helped establish the Clarist Sisters’ Convent in 1976. Soon afterwards, Rev. Fr. Augustine Neerampuzha, TOR became the first resident priest and began developing the parish.
Over the years, the church continued to grow under the leadership of several dedicated priests. Moreover, parish facilities were expanded with the construction of a church, priests’ residence, hostel for boys, and a multipurpose hall for parish celebrations. These developments strengthened both the spiritual and social life of the Catholic community.
Today, St. Peter’s Church serves around 1,800 Catholics from approximately 330 families across 50 villages. In addition, the parish celebrates Holy Mass, offers catechism classes, administers the sacraments, and organizes youth and charitable activities throughout the year. Therefore, the church continues to be an important center of Catholic worship, education, and community service in Giridih district.
