Brief History:

This historic church traces its origins to Saint Francis Xavier‘s 1542 visit to Palayakayal, then a prosperous port city known as The Noble City of Kayal. According to local tradition, Xavier performed the church’s first miracle by assisting a woman in difficult childbirth through prayer and baptism. The current structure was built by Portuguese traders in 1708. The parish was formally established in 1920, marking the beginning of indigenous Indian clergy leadership at the location. It now serves 613 families and maintains four branch churches including St. Michael the Archangel Church in Ambrose Nagar.
