St. James Church – Vadakkiyur Dindigul

Brief History:

The ancestors of current Vadakkiyur residents migrated approximately 150 years ago from Venganchiyoor (now Sathyanadhapuram). They initially engaged in agriculture and worshipped at the local church. When cholera spread through Sathyanadhapuram causing significant loss of life, the community relocated northward to establish a new settlement in Vadakkiyur. The original church featured mud brick walls. Descendants commemorate ancestors annually during the July festival with community meals. The St. James Festival has been celebrated continuously for 130 years. The old structure was demolished in 2018 and replaced with a new church, consecrated on October 26, 2020. The church serves 40 families as a branch of St. Anthony Church, Ulagampatti.
