History

The Catholic mission in Giridih began through the pioneering efforts of Rev. Fr. E. DeMeulder SJ. Later, Australian Jesuit missionaries from Hazaribag continued the pastoral work and strengthened the Catholic presence in the region. During the early years, the Carmel Sisters’ chapel served as the parish church.

Afterwards, Christ the King Church was built under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Mathew Chennatt and was blessed in 1988. Moreover, the parish residence was completed in 1990, providing improved facilities for pastoral ministry. Over the years, many dedicated priests faithfully served the parish and contributed to its spiritual and social development.

Today, the parish serves more than 1,100 Catholics from around 200 families. In addition, twelve active Basic Christian Community (BCC) units help strengthen parish life through prayer, faith formation, and community service. The church also works closely with several religious congregations involved in education, healthcare, and charitable ministries.
