History

Sacred Heart Church traces its origins to 1928, when Jesuit missionaries began their work in Gajhi and Chakai. Among them, Fr. John Morrison SJ served the parish for nearly 25 years, from 1944 until 1969. During his ministry, the church grew steadily and became a strong center of Catholic faith in the region.

Later, the church built by Fr. John Morrison was blessed by Bishop Augustine Wildermuth SJ of Patna in 1971. Notably, Sacred Heart Church is the only church in the Diocese of Bhagalpur constructed entirely from solid Munger stone, making it a distinctive landmark.

Over the years, many priests have guided the parish and strengthened its spiritual life. The parish also serves Catholics living in nearly 30 surrounding villages through regular pastoral visits, village Masses, catechism, and community outreach.

Today, Sacred Heart Church is home to about 1,494 Catholics from nearly 300 families. Furthermore, the parish has produced many priestly and religious vocations. It has also contributed to education and social development, with many parish members serving in the railway, armed forces, government, and other professions.

The parish continues the missionary spirit established by its early Jesuit pioneers. Their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment laid a strong foundation for the Catholic community that continues to flourish today.
