About St. Joseph’s Church, Belatanr

St. Joseph’s Church, Belatanr, was founded in 1972 under the Diocese of Bhagalpur. The mission was pioneered by Fr. Jacob Kollamparampil, who began his ministry under extremely challenging conditions, initially living in a temporary hut before constructing permanent mission buildings.

Through his dedicated efforts, the parish developed rapidly with the construction of the priests’ residence, a spacious church completed in 1976, and other essential facilities. Fr. Jacob also supervised the establishment of nearby mission centers, including Dulabitha, Harmathari, and Tilkimoron, significantly contributing to the growth of the Catholic community in the region.

The mission also played a key role in helping the Holy Cross Sisters establish their large campus and healthcare ministry. Holy Cross Hospital at Belatanr became a respected healthcare institution, serving patients suffering from tuberculosis and other serious illnesses. The hospital also gained recognition for developing “Mosbar,” a mosquito-repellent soap created through the efforts of Holy Cross Sister Usha.

Over the years, the parish has been served by several dedicated priests, including Fr. Thomas Kozhimala, Fr. Joseph Mullor, Fr. Chacko Kumpalamchira, and Fr. Scaria Kollerette. In May 2007, Garhi was established as a separate mission with its own resident priest.

Today, St. Joseph’s Church serves approximately 2,500 Catholics belonging to around 500 families across nearly 50 villages. Located about 200 km from Bhagalpur, the parish continues to nurture faith, education, healthcare, and priestly and religious vocations in the region.
