Brief History:

Holy Assumption Church, Mathiravilai, is one of the most ancient parishes in the Kanyakumari Diocese. The initial cross was erected in 1435, a palm-thatched chapel established in 1485, a stone church with tile roof built in 1555, and the current tower structure completed in 1825. The parish originated when a local resident named Pattannadar converted to Christianity, transforming the settlement into Mathiravilai – ‘the village where the Mother makes pilgrimage.’ The parish serves approximately 1,500 families with 30 religious sisters.
