Brief History:
The Holy Cross Shrine at Kanthal, Ooty was established in 1927 by French missionary priest Fr. Paul Gresac. The site originally functioned as a cemetery garden. In 1939, the Vatican’s representative in India presented a fragment of the True Cross, which was enshrined in a cross-shaped reliquary. This sacred relic transformed the site into a major pilgrimage destination, widely known as the Calvary of South India. The shrine features Passion Stations of Jesus and a natural spring believed to possess spiritual significance by devotees. Feast days are observed on May 3rd and September 13th each year.
