Brief History:

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Yercaud has roots tracing to 1845, when St. Joseph Church (Susayappan Church), Kovilmedu was built. In 1931, French priest Father Lison purchased land to construct the present sanctuary in Yercaud’s central location. The mountainous terrain required extensive leveling work, and the church was completed in 1934, recognized as an independent parish under the patronage of the Sacred Heart. Father Lison served as the first parish priest (1934-1949). The church features seven bronze bells imported from France that produce the seven musical notes, rung at Christmas, Easter, and New Year. The altar is a single stone block quarried from Kovilmedu, measuring 10 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. The parish manages two branch churches, four chapels, and is served by Salesian and other religious congregations. Located approximately 32 km from Salem city, the church serves approximately 800 families. The parish belongs to the Salem Diocese. Learn more about the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
