Brief History:

St. Joseph Church in Kovilmedu stands as the first Christian church built in the Erode hills region, constructed in 1820 by early Christian devotees. In 1826, a bell imported from France was installed. The church was purchased and expanded in 1845 by Rev. Quyon, and the Stations of the Cross were erected and blessed in 1880. A major renovation was completed in 1899, and in 1901, St. Joseph’s LRC School was established. The church underwent further renovation in 1967 and was blessed by Bishop Venmani Selvanadar. The parish serves 240 families organized into 6 associations and celebrates its feast on May 1 in honour of St. Joseph. The church is located 2 km from Erode and belongs to the Salem Diocese.
