Brief History:

Saint Michael the Archangel Church in Vazhaithottam traces its origins back nearly 150 years. According to local tradition, the village derived its name, meaning “banana garden,” after a merchant established extensive banana cultivation in the area. As families gradually settled in the region, they built a small palm-leaf chapel dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, seeking his protection against evil and spiritual dangers. The church was erected on land traditionally regarded as sacred, where burials had once taken place, further strengthening its significance within the community. Over time, the humble chapel was replaced with a tiled church and has continued to develop into an important centre of Catholic worship. Today, the parish serves approximately 330 Catholic families, and its annual feast is celebrated from September 20 to September 29 in honour of St. Michael the Archangel.
