Brief History:
St. Lourdes Church, Mariyammalpur, has its origins in the missionary efforts of French missionary Rev. Fr. Nicholas Adiyalar, who established this pastoral settlement around the early 20th century. After purchasing land in the fertile village area, he encouraged Christian families to settle and develop a faith community. The village later came to be known as Mariyammalpur after a local woman named Mariyammal, whose suggestion for the name was accepted by the residents. Initially, a small chapel dedicated to the Savior served the spiritual needs of the community for nearly 32 years. As the Catholic population increased, a dedicated church was constructed in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes and was solemnly consecrated on September 21, 1929. Today, the church serves around 140 Catholic families and continues to be a centre of prayer and devotion. The annual feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated for ten days, beginning in the last week of September and concluding in the first week of October.
