About St. Joseph’s Church, Baromasia
St. Joseph’s Church, Baromasia, is one of the oldest Catholic missions in the Godda region of Jharkhand, with its mission history dating back to 1930. The early missionary work was carried out from Godda by Fr. R. Bohn, S.J., who acquired a small piece of land where the CMC Sisters’ establishment is currently located.
During the early years, land acquisition was challenging as Baromasia was part of the Damin Koh region, where land ownership by non-Santhals was restricted. Fr. Thadeus Mudry TOR played an important role in developing the mission by constructing the first residence at Baromasia.
The present church was blessed on 19 March 1974. Baromasia also witnessed a memorable event on 8 December 1962 during the blessing of the school, when Bishop Urban was ceremonially taken around the village on an elephant.
The parish has been served by several dedicated priests, including Fr. Abraham, Fr. Simon Engler TOR, Fr. Anthony Xalxo TOR, Fr. George Thymoottil, Fr. Thomas Vetticad, Fr. Gregory Kuttickal, Fr. Michael Kallamplackal, Fr. James Valiapura, and Fr. Thomas Marandi.
Today, St. Joseph’s Church serves approximately 1,500 Catholics belonging to around 300 families. Located about 85 km from Bhagalpur, the parish continues its mission through pastoral services, education, and community development.
