History
St. Thomas Church has served the Catholic community in Jhajha for many decades. At first, the faithful were cared for by priests from Chakai because there was no resident parish priest. Later, Rev. Fr. Daniel T. Rice SJ built the church to meet the growing pastoral needs of the area.
Afterwards, Rev. Fr. Thomas Vetticad became the first diocesan priest to reside in Jhajha. Over the years, many priests continued to strengthen parish life through regular worship, pastoral care, and educational service. Moreover, the parish also supported the nearby mission station at Gotari by celebrating Holy Mass there whenever possible.
Today, St. Thomas Church serves about 100 Catholics from nearly 50 families across 25 villages. In addition, the parish manages an English-medium school that contributes to the education of local children. The parish campus has also been improved with renovated buildings, landscaped surroundings, and a cemetery that serves both Catholic and Protestant communities.
Therefore, St. Thomas Church continues to be an important center of Catholic faith, education, and community service in the Jamui district.
