Brief History:

Considering the spiritual welfare of the 1500 Catholics living at the villages of Mutthaiyapuram, Soosainager and Atthimarapatti about 9 k.m. northwest of Thoothukudi city and the wellbeing of thousands of non-Catholics dwelling in the same area, a parish was established having Mutthaiyapuram as its center. Bishop Peter Fernando on the 26th of May 2002, inaugurated this parish with Fr. Joseph Amalraj as its first parish priest by consecrating the new church. This parish was bifurcated from M. Saveriarpuram parish. As there was no rectory, the parish priest was living in a rented house. The rectory was built named as “Carmel Mount” and blessed on the feast of St. John Mary Vianney, the patron of parish priests on the 4th of August 2003. Sunday masses are celebrated at 7 a.m. at Soosainager and at 9 a.m. at Mutthaiyapuram. Weekday masses take place at 7 p.m. at the parish and in other places according to their needs. Every Friday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. prayer fasting and contemplation take place. The patron saint’s feast is celebrated on the Sunday before or after the 29th of September. The vestibule and bell tower are yet to be built.
