Brief History:

The church was established by Bishop Dr. Francis Tiburtius Roch, S.J., when he founded St. Ignatius School for underprivileged students. A small chapel was subsequently erected and dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, leading to the area being named Ignatius Puram under his patronage. In 1964, it was elevated to an independent parish, and between 1970 and 1974, a larger church building with asbestos roofing was constructed and consecrated. The parish now serves 950 families in the Thoothukudi area.
