Brief History:

Holy Immaculate Mother Church at Malayadippatti was established approximately 300 years ago by Portuguese-descended clergy from the Old Madurai Diocese. The initial chapel was constructed in 1662 by Fr. Emmanuel Rodrigues near the mountain base and dedicated to Mary. Due to concerns about falling rocks, residents relocated slightly inland, establishing the current town. A new church was built in 1714 under Fr. Anthony Dias with support from local ruler Muthunayakkar. The structure underwent major restoration from January 2007 with formal rededication on March 28, 2007, by Bishop Anthony Devotta. Further renovation occurred in 2014, coinciding with the church’s 300th anniversary celebration. The annual feast is celebrated in August over ten days.
