Brief History:
Savior of the World Basilica at Palakarai, Tiruchirappalli, is one of five major basilicas in Tamil Nadu. The foundation stone was laid on February 9, 1880, and the basilica was inaugurated on June 29, 1881. The magnificent Gothic-style structure stands 128 feet high, 192 feet long, and 55 feet wide, constructed with lime brick and eight buttresses. Two church bells were donated in 1881, weighing 2 tons and 1 ton respectively. The basilica was elevated to basilica status due to documented miracles reported by devotees. It serves approximately 7,500 Catholics in the surrounding area and manages an orphanage, a tailoring training center (established 1966), schools, and a Catholic club. Wednesday novenas and full moon prayer gatherings attract significant attendance from multiple districts.
