Church Established – 1974.

Brief History:

Velankanni Mother Shrine at Karumalai, Valparai originated in the 1940s when residents sought spiritual protection against snakes by venerating Saint George. According to tradition, a British estate official’s horse refused to proceed at a specific location, which locals interpreted as divine guidance. Following this sign a small chapel was constructed at that spot. The site was later relocated in 1974 to serve the growing population in the area, approximately 8 kilometers from Valparai. A new church structure was consecrated in 2003 by the then-bishop. The shrine serves 15 families. The feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni is celebrated on the second Saturday and Sunday of September.
