Brief History:
The settlement originated with marginalized communities migrating from Kaveri riverbanks due to disease and flooding, settling near the Puruja River. By the 17th century under Raja Mangamma’s rule, Mangamannuthu served as a revenue collection center for 18 village clusters. The shrine’s spiritual significance traces to Jesuit missionaries, particularly Fr. Augustine Cappelli (1697-1702). According to tradition, when departing due to local opposition, Cappelli left behind a statue of Saint James that locals believed could not be moved. He later became a martyr. The community constructed a palm-frond chapel for the statue. The parish separated administratively in 1991 followed by significant structural renovations. The church serves 180 Christian families and the feast is celebrated July 23-25 over three days.
