Brief History:

According to tradition, in the mid-16th century the Virgin Mary appeared to a young cowherd near Velankanni. When the boy gave milk to the Christ Child as Mary instructed, the milk miraculously multiplied, astonishing all who witnessed it. A beautiful church and a sacred pond (kulam) were subsequently constructed at the site where this apparition occurred, and this holy place in Old Velankanni continues to draw the faithful in devotion to Our Lady of Health.
