Brief History:
Sacred Heart Cathedral, Thanjavur, is the mother church of the Thanjavur Diocese. Construction began in 1866 under French Jesuit priest Fr. Joseph Leroux, and the first Mass was celebrated in 1869, making it the second church dedicated to the Sacred Heart in the Madurai Jesuit province. The structure reflects Gothic architectural elements with distinctive black stone pillars. The cathedral serves approximately 1,200 families through 35 sodalities, and the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated annually on June 28.
