Brief History:

Karungadal was formerly known as Mayakothaneri, a village inhabited primarily by farmers and palm workers. During the British period, visitors arriving in the rainy season noticed the land surrounded by dark floodwaters and began referring to the area as Karungadal, meaning “Black Sea,” a name that has remained ever since. The statue of the Holy Mother of Health was brought from Europe during the 1920s, inspiring the establishment of the parish. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1942, and the completed church was solemnly consecrated in 1949. After many decades as a mission chapel, Karungadal was elevated to an independent parish on September 2, 2021. Today, the parish also provides pastoral care to its two branch churches: St. Santhana Matha Church at Kattarimangalam and St. Anthony’s Church at Chinnamadankudiyiruppu.
