Selva Mata Church (Ship Church)

Uvari, Tuticorin Diocese, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu.
Parish Priest – Fr. Dominic Aruval.
Church Established – 1974.

Brief History:

A Portuguese ship carrying a statue of Mary (sent by Fr. Anthony Susai’s sister from Rome) was accidentally discovered by local fishermen in nearby Kuduthala. The community established the statue in a convent chapel initially. In 1970, a unique ship-shaped church was designed to symbolise the connection between earthly and heavenly realms, with Mary as the bridge. The architectural design features a ship base supporting a sky-plane structure, and the church was consecrated on February 5, 1974. Learn more about the Ship Church architectural concept.
