Brief History:
St. Antony’s Church, Madathuvilai, traces its origins to the Catholic families who initially lived in Veerakulam village before relocating to Madathuvilai in search of a safer and healthier environment. After acquiring land and establishing a new settlement, the community built a modest prayer hall where they enshrined the statue of St. Anthony of Padua for regular worship. As the congregation grew, a permanent church was constructed and solemnly consecrated on February 19, 1987, by Bishop S.T. Amalnadhar. In 2006, the church roof was struck by lightning, causing structural damage, though no injuries were reported. The church was subsequently renovated and rededicated in 2011, and a beautifully carved wooden festival chariot was added in 2014 for annual celebrations. Today, the church serves approximately 35 Catholic families. The annual feast of St. Anthony is celebrated over thirteen days, beginning on January 14, with liturgical services, processions, and community festivities.
