History

The property at Kutchery Chowk, known as Shanti Niwas, was purchased by the Diocese of Bhagalpur on 17 November 1966. After renovation, the building was dedicated as St. Benedict’s Church in honor of an American benefactor who helped fund the mission.

In 1968, the diocesan Chancery Office was established on the property. At that time, the parish church functioned from a small room on the ground floor. Later, several priests served the parish and contributed to its growth. Fr. Thomas Thanni became the parish priest and procurator in 1971, helping strengthen the parish community.

Furthermore, the present church building was blessed in 1975 by Fr. Gregory Kuttickal, who was then the Administrator and Vicar General of the Diocese. Since then, St. Benedict’s Church has continued to serve the faithful through regular liturgical celebrations, pastoral care, and parish ministries.

Today, the parish serves around 840 Catholics. Approximately 70 families are active members of the parish. Although the Catholic population changes during school holidays, the church remains a vibrant center of worship and community life throughout the year.
