On Sunday January 10th 2010 the church compound of The Holy Magi Gorai, was, decked up with festoons and banners. The mood was festive. Parishioners were attending the 9:30 am concelebrated mass to roll out the year long bi-centenary celebrations of their church that was built in 1810. The ruins of the earlier church built around 1630 still stands silently entwined within the roots of a banyan tree on the banks of the Vairala Talav amidst the fertile Gorai fields.
Newly elected Archbishop Felix Machado of the Vasai diocese was present at the mass after which he flagged off the bi-centinary celebrations. He also exhorted exhorted them of the need of the hour “Unityâ€
Holy Magi Church looks resplendent and immaculate. The old carved wooden altar and the antique furniture as well as the ornately carved murals on the walls are restored meticulously to its original glory. Holy Magi Church today is a tourist attraction. Credit for this goes not only to the parish fathers Anselm Gonsalves and Edward Gauriya,but also the parishioners who are now educated in the heritage values of their church building and its properties.
The bicentenary celebrations are planned throughout the year and will run into January 2011. The Parish fathers along with the Parish Council and Religious, have organized a calendar of events running throughout the year.
Gorai village is one of Mumbai’s most popular picnic destinations. Visiting this beautifully restored church is a must !
