About the Church:

Towards the end of the 19th century, Mgr. Gandhi had a great devotion to the scared heart and he wanted to have a ‘ Mont Martre’( the church which stands magnificently in the hills of France said to be famous for its architectural wonder) in Pondicherry. In the year 1895 on June 23rd when he dedicated the people of Pondicherry to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he decided to build a monument like Mont Martre here. As the town was extending to the railway station , the need was felt for a new church in the extension and in 1902 a new church was started in Honour of the Sacred Heart. Fr.Telesphore Welter, who was in charge of the work almost completed the construction by December 1902 when he died at Nellithope.

The church is built in the resemblance of Latin cross structure and Gothic architecture. The magnificent church of 50 meters length , 48 meters width and 18 meters height is supported by 24 huge pillars. The windows in the top are made of stained glass. These glasses are specially made with saints pictures in them and the altar still stuns the people for its artistical work.
