Brief History:
The Dawn Star Basilica, consecrated in 2013, is part of the historic Velankanni Shrine complex. Built without pillars and resembling a giant pearl shell, the structure measures 400 feet in length, 138 feet in width, and features a 150-foot-tall tower. The original shrine at Velankanni dates to the mid-16th century following three Marian apparitions, and was elevated to Minor Basilica status by Pope John XXIII in 1962. The Feast of Our Lady of Health is celebrated annually on September 8.
