Brief History:

Holy Fatima Mother Church, Koovaikinaru, originated when families from the nearby Gomanaeri settlement relocated about one kilometre away due to recurring communal tensions. The new settlement developed around an old banyan tree with a natural well and stream, and the place came to be known as Koovaikinaru, inspired by the koovai birds that nested in the tree near the water source. Under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. Gnanapprakasam from Somnathaperi Parish, several residents embraced Christianity in 1950. Through the efforts of Rev. Fr. Anthony S. Fernando, two statues of Our Lady of Fatima were brought to the community in 1952. The church was completed and solemnly consecrated on February 17, 1953, by Bishop Thomas Fernando. Today, the church serves approximately 37 Catholic families and remains a centre of Marian devotion. The annual feast of Holy Fatima Mother is celebrated over ten days, with the main celebration held on May 13 in honour of Our Lady of Fatima.
