Brief History:

Once upon a time this village was the boundary of the kingdoms of the Cheras, Cholas and Pandiyas. So, it had an inn and well for the guarding soldiers, which became the cause of the name of Kavalkiraru. Catholicism took root in the 1700s and it was a substation of Vadakangulam parish. In 1843 a Jesuit named Castanier built a church in here for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1911 it was made a parish with Panagudi, Eruvadi, Vallioor, Thirukurungudi and Nanguneri as susbstations. Our Lady of Good Help became its patron saint.

There is a church of St. Antony and one of Our Lady of Fatime at the junction. Outside the village at the junction of kavalkinaru, there is the church of our Lady of Fatima. On Mahendragiri which is part of the Western ghats that lies beyond the church, stands a Cross which was established by Fr. Navamoni on the 13th of May 1957. At Punniavalanpurm, a substation of Kavalkinaru, there is a church of Our Lady of Good health.
