Brief History:

Taking into account the spiritual needs and other development of the people of State Bank coloney and the surrounding area, Bishop Peter Fernando made this as an independent parish with Fr. Rajareegam as its first parish priest on the 11th of May, 2001. As there was no church or rectory, the parish priest stayed at the Sacred Heart Senetorium and said daily masses at the chapel and Sunday masses at the temporary tent. Foundation was laid by the Bishop for the new church on 7-9-2001. With help from the Propaganda Fide and that of the parishioners and other benefactors, the church was built within 10 months. The church was consecrated by the Bishop on the 22nd of December 2002. Since its opening devotees of Our Lady come and make this as a shrine and house of prayer. It is significant that of all the churches of Thoothukudi, this is the first parish dedicated to Our Lady of Veilankanni. Every Saturday at 5.30 p.m. novena mass is celebrated for the devotees. Devotees bear witness to the blessings they received through the intercession of Our Lady. The consruction within such a short span of time of this beautiful chuch itself can be considered as a miracle. The health of the parish priest during the construction period, despite his heart surgery and continued medical treatment can be said as the second miracle. The first feast of this parish was celebrated on the 8th of September 2003. The Bishop blessed the rectory on the 5th of October 2003.
