Brief History:
This Church has a rich historical background. Its unique feature is that it is built in a Catholic Cemetery. This Cemetery was built in December 1776 for Catholics. It was formally registered on 28th June 1814. In the same year, a Chapel was built in the cemetery to meet the pastoral needs of the local people working in the harbour, and in the factories of North Madras. Till 1914, it was a sub-station of St Peter’s in Royapuram. On 15th July, 1914 the Chapel was extended and a belfry was built. Yielding to the wishes of the parishioners, to have another Parish Church, His Grace, Dr Casmir Gnanadickam SJ blessed and laid the foundation stone. On 22nd February 2004, the Church was completed. On that day, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore Most Rev Dr Arul Das James consecrated it as the new Parish Church.

Dear Father, My precious mum & brother are buried there and I am living overseas. I want to know if there is some one (maid) as to keep the grave neat & clean at all times. Some of my family visit and say it is dirty and hard to find because of the bushes etc. Can you please advise or try and do something on the website so we can also view the grave online… Thank you Father. GB Susie

Hello Fr Peter,I have just received a letter in the post from you stating that you require grave maintenance fees for GRAVE M 59 (CABRAL).I have a receipt #854 for Rs 500/- paid on August 6th, 2013 by my sister Christine Cabral. We are already in April and it is impossible for any of us to come there and pay you in person. We usually allow the payment when someone is visiting India. We will see if we can nominate someone from there to pay the dues. Your letter does not mention the fee amount allocated to M59.You may email me ceeceees@hotmail.com which is on your records on contact me by mobile +613408309483 or my landline+61397259019.If all else fails, I will make a visit next year and pay you in advance for the next 5 years or so.Do hope this will suit you. We do have a few payment slip and not proper receipts from Sebastian who is sadly no more (may his soul RIP)Thank you fro being Patient.Best RegardsCedric Cabral & SusieQ
I was in St.Roque’s Parish bet. the years 1954 to 1965 and that time itself it was a Separate Parish and
Rev. Fr. George (no more now) was the Parish Priest of this Church during this time. My sister and my Parents are buried here only. Of course the new church might have been completed in 2004.
While appreciating the brief history given above, I would like to know as to why nothing is given about Fr. Gnanaprakasam who is buried there and whose bones were found intact even after more than a century of his death. I and my family were parishioners in that parish for more than 45 years and now we are moved out. I shall be thankful if you can give the history about him also,
